The origins of HM Factory Gretna stems from the Shell Scandal of 1915, when The Times newspaper reported the huge shortage of ammunition on the Western Front and the desperate need to increase in the production of high explosive munitions
The museum’s first floor examines the events surrounding the Outbreak of the World War Two and Life on the Homefront.
Many exhibits can be found outside the museum. Our fireless locomotive Sir James was used at HM Factory Gretna to transport explosive materials across the 9 mile site without causing dangerous sparks. The museum also harks back to the home front of World War Two with its very own Dig for Victory Garden
