First Floor – World War Two Gallery (1939-1945)

The museum’s first floor examines the events surrounding the Outbreak of the World War Two and Life on the Homefront.  The experiences of local Evacuees and Barnardo’s Boys that were welcomed to our rural area to escaping German air raids in Glasgow and Newcastle is told.

The display then looks at the continuation of the areas relationship with munitions in World War Two and the Cold War. HM Factory Gretna ceased production after World War One, and the land was re-used by the Home Office to provide munitions storage depots in Longtown and Eastriggs. Local people also worked at the ICI Powfoot and produced Cordite and TNT for small arms and high explosive shells. This important local history is reflected in through case studies and oral testimonies.

The Royal Air Force also recognised the benefit of this remote area and established RAF Annan in 1942 as a training ground for new fighter pilots. At this RAF station rookie pilots learned to fly the Hawker Hurricane under the direction of veterans of the Battle of France and Battle of Britain.

As the Second World War ended, the beginning of the Nuclear Age began. During the Cold War Scotland’s first nuclear power station was constructed at Chapelcross. The arrival of the power station was a major boost to local employment and the growth of the town of Annan. Chapelcross kept the area at the forefront of military activity until the decommissioning process began in 2004.
