Schools / universities attended and years of attendance: He went to Wigan Grammar School, at least when he was aged 14. In 1915 he graduated from Manchester University, as recorded in the Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser, as a Master of Science. His degree may have been second class. 

Occupation: (Chemical) Engineer. On his marriage certificate his rank/profession is simply stated as Pioneer. 

Place of residence at Gretna: No indication of his place of residence at Gretna, but his home, as recorded in Dornock Farwell, was 602 Ormskirk Road, Pemberton, Wigan. Is also recorded in the 1911 census.
