The 1891 census shows her parents living at 24 Corporation Rd, Carlisle , father a carpenter.
1901 – living at 66 Corporation Rd, Carlisle. Father a joiner, employer. Emma the youngest of 3 girls.
1910 father died.
1911-living at 181 Warwick Rd, Carlisle, 9 rooms. Mother widowed having had 5 children in total with 3 surviving. Emma is a typist and book keeper for a Manchester Warehouse
The 1921 census lists Emma as being an ex Gretna worker but no indications as to what she did there. She is listed with her mother, her sister Mary Evelyn plus 2 others.
1930 April or May – married Thomas McHugh of Kendal at Carlisle.
1939 – living at 14 Natland Rd, Kendal , Thomas a civil engineer for Ministry of Labour. Could they have met at Gretna?
