George Alexander Alderson 1878-1956
George Alexander Alderson was born on 30th March 1878 in Carlisle to Jane nee Clark. It seems in later documentation that there was a father but his name is not evident.
In 1881 – living at Aunt and uncle’s house with his mother at Waterloo House, Botchergate , Carlisle. Mother described as married so father possibly away in Boer War.
1891 – living at 29 Cecil St with step father Hugh Johnstone , a foundry manager and mother at 87 Broad Street, Rickergate , Carlisle. Now a mechanical engineer.
Q3 1907 married Mary ridley at Carlisle
1908 onwards in territorial Border Regiment – records show he was in Fleetwood, Barrow, Conway and Skipton.
1911 – 13, Irthing Street, Carlisle . 5 rooms with wife . A sanitary engineer.
1914 in Suez and late by 10 minutes reprimanded according to service records. Still territorial Border regiment.
February 1916 – hospitalised and discharged from Border Regiment territorial in April 1916.
25th Sept 1917 initiated into Union Lodge , Carlisle ( Freemasons) – engineer.
Gretna as an engineer? Following discharge? Living at home in Carlisle?
1921 census described as an ex or retired Gretna worker . George Alexander, Mary , Ursula plus 2 others on the record.
1939 – retired engineer , Mary a hotel proprietress at 61 Botchergate, Carlisle now sadly demolished.
Died 17th April 1956 at 1 Hart Street, Carlisle
