My grandmother (Jane Ann Jackson) was born in Low Moorhouse outside of Carlisle in 1897, she started life as an understairs maid in a local “big” house. On her one day off a month she cycled to Carlisle to take typing classes. I don’t know if Gretna was her first typing position but it may well have been. She met my grandfather after he returned from POW camp after WWI, they married (1922) and settled in Gretna in the “temporary” houses that were built, later moving to Dumfries in 1936. I have attached copies of the testimonials she was given on leaving H.M Factory Gretna and a photograph of my grandparents outside their house in Gretna.’
