Biography

Childhood: Born into a middle class family. His father was a grocer and provision merchant. I traced the family back to 1749 in  Malmesbury. His Grandfather  ( William) was born in Kent but of a Malmesbury family. William married 1834 at Malmesbury.  The fact that William was born in Kent raises the possibility of a connection to the well known Military Adye Family. (I thought this beyond by remit). John went to Westport  (C.E.)  Elementary  School  and the County Secondary School, Malmesbury. Where he matriculated University from the University of London in 1909.

The 1841 census shows 31 Adye’s living in Wiltshire all but one having been born in the town.

Parents: Albert Adye was born in the 1st Quarter 1854. His father was a Braizer.  He had seven siblings.  He married Ruth Hudson in 1880 and died  in Malmesbury  on 4th May 1932. Ruth died on 27th April 1937.

Parent’s occupations: In 1871 Albert at 17yrs was a Grocer on the High Street, Malmesbury.  He became Mayor of the Town in 1906 & 1914-1915. Also an Alderman.

Schools / universities attended and years of attendance: Wiltshire Council granted him a Scholarship in September 1908 to the University Of Bristol where he  studied Science. He graduated with  BSc in July 1912.  He seems to have been the first of his family to go to University
