Biography

Her name was Rachel Gillan, born 12/6/1899 in Calton, Glasgow and she lived in either Stevenson Street or Kite Street. I believe that she had had some sort of prior experience in industry before getting the job at Eastriggs and the story passed down was that she shared a house or rented a room in the town with a friend. We believe that she may also have known some Belgians there who taught her to swear in their language! Later she returned to Calton and married Owen Mullaney, a shipyard worker; they had four children and raised a nephew as well.

Rachel and Owen were decent, honest, and hardworking. She was a much loved mother and grandmother and did have a small flat in Rothesay which was kept for them. She was a spirited lady.

In later years she lived in Provanmill, Glasgow. She died on 13/7/1981. – Information supplied by relatives
