Thomas Irwen Cairns was born at Stapleton, Longtown, near Carlisle on 13 May 1881 to James and Sarah nee Forster.
1891 living in West Linton Village near Longtown. Father a farm servant. Thomas eldest of 3 children B/G/G
1901- Esk St, Longtown. Father and Thomas are ploughmen on farm. Now eldest of 5 children. B /G/G/B/B
28th February 1905 married Jessie Hope Barclay at Arthuret ( Longtown’s Parish)
1911 -24 English Street, Longtown. Surfaceman for North British Railway Ltd., 2 rooms had 3 children, 2 living also brother in law in house.
WW1 employed at H M Factory Gretna possibly is his usual occupation of surfaceman for the railways onsite.
