Thomas Leach 1858-1938

Thomas Leach was born in Lanercost, Cumberland in 1858 to school master Thomas Leach and dressmaker mother Elizabeth nee Dixon.

1861 – Thomas is the 5th of 6 children. G/G/B/B/B/G living at Banks, Burtholme ( Hadrian’s Wall)

1871-1871 6 Lees Hill, Askerton . Father a school master, mother a dressmaker.

1881 – 60 Charles St, Botchergate, Carlisle. Thomas a ‘Spirit merchant assistant.’ Mother now a widow, head of house – a dressmaker. 8 month Carolina – boarder.

1891- Carolina now adopted daughter. Thomas a general labourer. Still at Charles Street.

1901- Charles Street, Sister Mary is head of household- a charwoman. Thomas a general labourer.

1911- 23 Union Street, Carlisle Single-Living alone in  2 rooms , a general labourer  aged 52.

WW1 – too old for military service but employed at Gretna according to 1921 census. Probably as a general labourer or in a manual capacity.

1921 census , Thomas, Bessie, James and 6 others are on the record. This could have been a lodging house.

1938 – died Carlisle aged 80
