‘Mrs Winne Nicol Miller of Edinburgh: Remembers working at Gretna between 1916-1918, travelling from her home in Wick, Caithness. She can recall the wooden huts, iron stove, bedroom and most of all the severe cold. She also remembers having fresh fruit in wartime, which was considered a luxury. She recalls a large house within walking distance of the factory called ‘Weatheral’, which was used as a convalescent home for servicemen.’ – G Routledge, Gretna’s Secret War, (Bookcase, 1999) p. 55 and 60.
