WW1 employed at Gretna as described in the unfortunate theft below.

“Dumfries and Galloway Standard – Saturday 10 March 1917

THEFT OF POSTAL ORDER. Sarah Harrop, munition worker, Gretna, was charged with having, between 6th and 10th February, in the Florence McDonald Hostel, Gretna, opened a lockfast locker by means of a key and stolen a postal order for 5s, the property of Ada Gertie Moreland, munition worker, East 5, Gretna. Accused pleaded guilty to stealing the postal order, but not from the locker, and the modified plea was accepted. Mr Kissock said the girl from whom the order was stolen was in the Florence McDonald Hostel at the time of the offence and accused had the cubicle next to her. On 6th February the girl Moreland says, she locked this postal order in the locker in her cubicle, intending to send it her sister home. On the 9th she discovered it was missing, and searched her locker and cubicle without result. She wrote to her sister and informed her of the loss, and the sister, on making inquiries at the Post Office, ascertained that the order had been cashed at Bishop Auckland, where she resides, by brother of the accused, to whom she had apparently sent it. The girl Moreland put the key of the locker below the mattress, and was opinion that accused had opened the locker with it, but possibly it might have dropped out from under the mattress. There were no previous convictions against accused, and she seemed to have had a good enough character hitherto. It was reported that her parents were in respectable circumstances. She was not considered suitable for borstal institution. There was no evidence that she had been with bad companions hitherto. Mr Edgar said accused was 17 years age. and her parents reside near Bishop Auckland. She found the order lying the floor between the entry to her cubicle and that of the girl Moreland. She was tempted to take it, and sent it to her parents. She had been eight weeks at Dornock, and had been several days in prison. She wished, if possible, to get back to her work at Gretna, but now she must reside outside or go back to her home. Sentence was deferred till 29th May.”
