We were delighted to be contacted by a relative of Ellen Nevis who worked at H.M. Factory Gretna. A huge thank you to the relative for getting in touch and sharing the following information with us.
Her name was Ellen Nevins. She was born in Wakefield Yorkshire on 19 May 1897, the daughter of William Nevins and Sarah Jane Nevins nee Monaghan. Unfortunately her mother died in June 1901 a year after a baby sister was born and died in 1900.
She moved to Lancashire by the 1911 Census. In Apr 1919 she married an Italian fish and chip seller in Carlisle just before she gave birth to a son in July 1919.
The marriage to Giovanni did not last long and she went on to have 5 more children by 2 other men ending up marrying the latter but only in 1951 after Giovanni died. She died in May 1962 and is buried with her 2nd husband in Crewe cemetery, Cheshire.
