Ewart Birnie was born on 30th January 1889 at Gretna, Scotland to Margaret [Maggie] J Birnie. No father is listed on the birth registration. Margaret was a housekeeper at the time.
1891 – living at 4 Harries Court, Workington, Cumberland, he, and his mother are staying with his mother’s brother.
1901 – 7 Market Place, Egremont, staying with his uncle Thomas Ewart, a fishmonger, own account wife Ann and their 2 daughters who are both school teachers.
WW1- employed at H M Factory Gretna as an Officer of customs and living at 100-102 Vancouver Road, Eastriggs (Electoral Register)
January 1922 married Clara Mabel Wigston, 9 years his junior, at Carlisle. It is possible that Clara was also employed at Gretna.
1939- living at Clarecroft, Skinburness Road, Silloth, Cumberland. Marine RG Office of Customs and Excise superintendent
5th August 1959 died aged 70. Registered Carlisle
Clara died in 1979 in Miami.
