George Benson was born on 27th October 1881 at Longtown near Carlisle, Cumberland to William John and Elizabeth nee Richardson. Younger of 2 boys. Father a joiner.
1891- living at Mary Street, Longtown. Mother widowed- a charwoman
1901- 75 Swan Street, Longtown. Working as a railway ? ( indecipherable on census return)
14th November 1905 married Mary Atkinson at Longtown
1911- Black Bank, Rockcliffe, near Longtown. A railway surfaceman and his wife a keeper at the level crossing. 3 children, married 5 years and living in 3 rooms.
1913- member of National Union of Railwaymen- surfaceman
WW1- employed at Gretna
1921 – George, Mary, James and 5 others on the record at Arthuret ( Longtown) . George listed as an ex Gretna worker.
1939- 48 Swan Street, Longtown. A general labourer for County Council
6th September 1943 died at Longtown aged 62
