Jane Sutherland McKenzie

Birthplace Moray Hopeman Scotland Date of Birth: January 19, 1894

Biography

Info from relative: Her name was Jane Sutherland McKenzie, she was one of nine children and the only one to come to work in Eastriggs. She was my grandfathers sister and was born in Hopeman which was a small fishing village just north of Elgin on the Morayshire coast in Scotland. I don’t know when she came to work in the “porridge factory” but by 1917 she had died of Phthisis according to her death certificate. She was born in 1894. Details passed down through my family describe her skin turning a yellow colour, this leads me to think that the death diagnosis may be incorrect, the family always believed that her death was caused by something to do with her work in the factory.

Photo kindly shared with the museum by family.
