John grew up in the grocery business, his father had a shop in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire. John met a local girl, Mary Robson, and married 4th December 1894, Dumfries. After having 2 sons James & Norman, Mary died 26th March 1905, 5 Bruce Street, Annan.

John and his sons left the area, and met & married Margaret Davidson on 7th June 1906, Glasgow.

By 1911 census, John and family were living in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, where John was working as a fruit/farm labourer. Their son John was born there 23rd August 1911, Lower Mill Street, Blairgowrie.

On 1921 census, John and family were living at 30 Dunedin Road, Eastriggs, John 50 years, now a Grocers manager.

John died 11th February 1942, Ashbank, Eastriggs, he was a retired grocer and was 71 years.

John is in Annan Cemetery with his first wife Mary and sons James & Norman.
