John was born in 1876 Holywood, Dumfriesshire, his father was working as a railway porter. According to 1881 census, his fathers occupation was a shoemaker and living in Troqueer, Dumfries. Ten years later, John was a farm servant, 14 years, living with a family whilst his parents had moved back to Holywood.
After working as a farm servant during his teens & early twenties, John moved to Manchester where he is listed as a House Painter (1901). John married the next year, where his address is in Newcastle Upon Tyne, his occupation as a painter.
John continued his painting after WW1, staying in Eastriggs, working for the factory (1921).
