John Edward Read worked [at Gretna] in, at least, 1917 and 1918. JE Read was born in 1867 in Burnley and died in 1925 in Stockton-on-Tees.
In the 1901 and 1911 England and Wales Census he is listed as a “general contractor” and “contractor (building and roads)” which may be a hint as to what he was doing at Gretna. However, by 1921 he was a “progress clerk” at the Furness shipyard on Teesside so he may also have been a clerk or manager.
