Mathew had been an apprentice draper, until eventually becoming a steam crane driver. The family came to HM Factory Gretna in late 1916, and three of his children (Katie, Mary and Susan) were registered at the school in Dornock from January 1917. They had previously attended Hyde Park School, Glasgow. The family returned to Glasgow after the War and are living at Milton in 1921.
