1911- 16 Peel Street, Newtown, Carlisle, 4 rooms. 7 occupants including 2 boarders. Father a surfaceman for railway company. Robert the youngest of 3 at home. 8 children had been born and 4 survived.

1915- aged 16 joined National Union of Railway Workers, employed as a phone attendant

WW1 too young for military service. Employed at Gretna.

1921 – Robert James, Mary Glaister , Doris and 1 other are on the record in Carlisle. Robert listed as an ex Gretna woker.

Q1 1923 married Euphemia Challenger at Carlisle

1939 – at 17 Marina Crescent, Carlisle. General labourer heavy worker. 1 child.
