Thomas enlisted in the South Lancashire Regiment, before transferring as Pioneer 113285 to the Royal Engineers on 25/08/1915, being referred to as a Chemist. He is promoted corporal, and later sergeant, and is transferred to Army Reserve class W and comes under the ministry of munition’s explosive supply department. He presumably works at HM Factory Gretna, where he meets Christina Connon, and they marry in Longtown in 1919.
In 1921, Thomas, Christina and family are living in Shardlow, Derbyshire. In 1939 he is a Textile Chemist in an Artificial Silk Works, in Derby.
