Winifred Mary Gill was born on 16th June 1890 in Hackney, London, the eldest daughter of John William (b.1861) and Caroline Elizabeth (b.1860 nee Bancroft) Gill. John was a detective constable in the police in 1891. Winifred was baptised on 13th July 1890 at the St John of Jerusalem church in South Hackney. In 1901, Winifred is nine and John is a police sergeant.
Winifred may appear on the Irish census of 1911 at Kilwaughter, County Antrim, as a dressmaker and a servant in the household.
Winifred worked at HM Factory Gretna. We don’t know her role, but she is remembered on the Dornock Souvenir. Her forwarding address is her parents’ home at 250 Ongar Road, Brentwood, Essex.
In 1939 Winifred appears to be living in Bangor, North Wales and is a Hotel Warden.
