Our free Summer holiday programme for young people continued today with a Cookery Workshop. They made tasty chocolate biscuits from a World War Two rationing recipe. Thank you those who helped to make this happen and everyone who came to join in the workshop.

A free origami jewellery workshop took place at The Devil’s Porridge Museum today. Brilliant to see all the beautiful jewellery created by the young people who came to this!

Wednesday 31st July
Today we enjoyed celebrating the 100th anniversary of the auction of H.M. Factory Gretna and the townships of Eastriggs and Gretna with the local residents of Eastriggs. The official anniversary may have been on 22nd July, but today we had a 100 years of Eastriggs now and then display on from 6 to 9pm and free craft activity. There was also a buffet with tea and coffee for all those who came along. They were also welcome to look around The Devil’s Porridge Museum. Entry was free to all the residents of Eastriggs.

Saturday 3rd August
Today marked the start of Kid’s in Museums and Simon & Schuster Children’s Books, Grimwood Museum Adventure at The Devil’s Porridge Museum. Young visitors can complete the trail around the museum. There is also a competition to enter! Admission into The Devil’s Porridge Museum is required for this activity and it will be happening up to the 26th August 2024. Our Summer Programme came to the end with our Podcast workshop today. The first episode of our podcast is all about climate change and how it affects young people. A huge thank you to those who joined us for this. Below are some photos from this activity.

We were delighted to have the Scotia Crafters back at The Devil’s Porridge Museum again this year. They were setting up at The Devil’s Porridge Museum today and will be selling a selection of local handmade gifts, food and more until 1st September 2024. Entrance into the Scotia Crafters exhibition is free (admission prices do still apply to anyone who wants to look around The Devil’s Porridge Museum), so we would highly recommend having a look while they are at the museum.

The Grimwood Museum Adventure
Join us this August for a brilliantly bonkers museum trail, part of the national Grimwood Museum Adventure with Kids in Museums and Simon & Schuster Children’s Books. The trail celebrates the release of the latest book in the Grimwood series: Party Animals, written and illustrated by Nadia Shireen. Spot as many animals as you can find, complete puzzles and build a barmy bird’s nest from objects you can spot in the museum! Complete the trail. There is also a competition to enter!
This trail will be running at The Devil’s Porridge Museum from the 3rd to 26th August 2024.

Thursday 4th July
Our free Summer Holiday programme for young people started today with a Minecraft- Inspired Lego Building Competition. It was amazing to see what the young people who came along created out of Lego! There were so many creative designs that our judges found it very hard to choose our third, second and first place prize winners. The second and third place winners won Lego Minecraft magazines, while first place received a Lego Minecraft set. We loved all the Lego builds so much that we gave all the young Lego Master Builders who came along certificate and a little badge!

Today’s free workshop was 1940’s retro Make-Up workshop. It was lovely to have so many young people come along and fantastic to have some join us for a free breakfast before this workshop too.

Some of our Youth Council had a meeting today. Our Youth Council have regular meetings, get involved in projects, workshops and more. We’re very proud to have two representatives from the museum’s Youth Council who regularly attend The Devil’s Porridge Museum’s trustee meetings. This allows them to share their thoughts and make sure young people’s voices are heard in The Devil’s Porridge Museum!
