In 1891, Alfred is a farm servant at Warwick, Cumberland, and in 1901 he is working as an agricultural labourer boarding at Burgh by Sands.
The family are at Carlisle in 1911 and Alfred is a dairyman on a farm.
The family come to live at Gretna during the War, having arrived from Great Orton, Carlisle. Alfred is a stove setter and John George and Alfred are registered at the school, and Thomas is born at Gretna in 1919.
In 1939, Alfred and Mary Jane are back in Carlisle, and he is recorded as a farm labourer.
