Andrew Whitelaw was born in Glasgow in 1870 possibly to Archibald and Agnes Provan nee Stewart.
1891 – General labourer at No 2 Gateside , New Monkland , Lanarkshire. Father a retired cattle dealer
Lost a leg between 1891 and 1917.
Married and widowed.
From March 1916 – too old for military service. Employed at Gretna as a night watchman living at Criffel Hut, Butterdales , Dornock as reported below.
Dumfries and Galloway Standard – Saturday 10 March 1917
“OSTREPEROUS ONE-LEGGED MAN Andrew Whitelaw, watchman, Criffel Hut, Butterdales, Dornock, was charged with committing a breach of the peace on the Annan to Carlisle road near Dornock Station on 6th March. Mr I. F. Edgar tendered plea of guilty. Mr Kissock said about twenty minutes to nine accused came off a train at Dornock Station the worse of liquor. He commenced to use bad language, and was warned by constables. They put him on to the road, and advised him to go away, but again commenced his conduct, and threatened to kick the constables although he had only one leg. The constables had frequently assisted him home in such circumstances, but on this occasion had to take him into custody. Mr Edgar said accused was forty-seven years of age, and a native of Glasgow, and widower. He had been twelve months at Dornock, and on this occasion had had too much drink. He had a wooden leg. A fine of £3 or fourteen days was imposed. “
