In 1891, David is an apprentice carriage builder in Cheshire. In 1901 he is a carriage builder boarding in Prestwich, Manchester, and he marries Fanny Elizabeth the same year.
By 1911 the family are living in Colne, and David is a Railway Carriage and Wagon Inspector.
In December 1915 he joins Branch 2 Gretna Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners and comes to work at HM Factory Gretna. All the family lived at B 11 East, and Gladys, Mabel. Lily and George are all recorded on the school register.
After the war, by 1921 David has returned to being a carriage builder, for Great Central Railway, living at Dukinfield. In 1939 he is still a carriage builder, still living at Dukinfield.
