Dorothy Mary Champness 1890-1963

Dorothy Mary Champness was born on 20th November 1890 at 58, Stanley Grove Longsight , Manchester to Charles Henry Champness and Lizzie nee Tansley. She was baptised at the Dickenson Road , Rusholme Wesleyan chapel.

1891- still at 58 Stanley Grove, father a mercantile clerk.

1901 – 32 Wellington Grove, Stockport. Father a coal merchant – own account. Dorothy the only child.

1911-101 Buxton Road , Stockport. 5 rooms. Still the only child, aged 20 a milliner. Father a coal merchant – own account.

Gretna – Dorothy claims on 1921 census to be an ex Gretna worker. There is no indication as to her role there. Coming from a semi privileged home it is more likely that she held a position that was not working directly with the cordite , perhaps tablemaid, supervisor, maid to one of the matrons…

1921 census Dorothy Mary, Charles Henry and Lizzie are on this record. Dorothy’s year of birth is mis transposed to 1895.

1939 – 134, Sandown Rd, Stockport, a milliner living with her mother.

Remained unmarried and died on 13th April 1963 at Marton Green, Chelford Grove, Adswood, Stockport aged 73.
