The 1861 census shows William’s Grandfather Thomas and family are living in Stainton Village he is a Joiner Carpenter employing one boy, an apprentice John Kirkpatrick living with the family[21]. In 1871 Thomas has employed 2 apprentices , both lodging with the family, the eldest son Joseph (William’s father) is also a carpenter [22]. The 1901 census shows Joseph and Agnes in Eamont Bridge, Penrith, 2 of their sons are Joiners / Journeymen, one is a Joiner Apprentice and one is an Ironmongers Apprentice [23]
