Edward Johnston 1874-1955
Edward Johnston was born at Longtown, Cumberland on 29th October 1874 to Eleanor ( Ellen) . His father’s name is not clearly evident. He had a step father – John Kirkup. He was the second of 4 children.
1881-living at Arthur Street. Mother is an unmarried Agricultural labourer.
1891 – living at Back Street, Arthuret ( Longtown ). Mother is single. No w6 children, 2 are under 3. John Kirkup – an engine driver is a lodger. Edward is a farm labourer.
Quarter 3 1896 married Annie McVittie Davidson
1901- Bush Cottages, Bush Farm Kirkandrews Nether ( Mossband). 3 children and a Scottish wife. Edward is a stockman on a farm.
1911- farm foreman .6 children all survived. Bush Farm, Bush on Esk, Rockliffe. 3 rooms. Wife completed census – Edward possibly unable to read and write not literate.
WW1 Too old for military service. Employed at Gretna.
1919 – wife died
1921 – listed as an ex Gretna worker living in Longtown. Edward, Robert, Mary Ellen and 5 others are on this record.
