Kate Eleanor Ferguson 1892-1947
Kate Eleanor Ferguson was born at Sandysykes, Longtown near Carlisle on 4th August 1892 to William and Sarah nee Dixon. She was the eldest of 5 children
1901- living at 5 Parcelstown Cottage, SandySykes, Arthuret, Longown. Father a railway signalman.
1905- started Burgh by Sands primary school.
1911-father a station master. Living at Burgh-by-Sands. Mother is Scottish. Kate is living and working at Scaleby Hall, Carlisle aged 18 as a ‘betweenmaid’, domestic.
Red Cross service as VAD from 7th August 1916 to 7th January 1919.
6th August 1918 – awarded two scarlet stripes. These were awarded to VADs under contract to the War Office to denote that they had been certificated as efficient by their matron or commanding officer. She also nursed at Western General, Liverpool ( Red Cross records)
Working as a nurse and living at S. West 6. Township, Gretna
22nd January 1919 married Herman Willersdorf at St Andrew’s Church Gretna. He was a drapers assisitant and PTe 58 Australian Infantry . The address given was Hurdoff Camp Wilts.
His service record indicates that he had been gassed – severely – returned to France and then received a gunshot wound. He was hospitalised in England including Liverpool. He was discharged on 7th January 1919.
On 9th August 1919 they returned to Australia on HT “Ceramic” – “ wounded mustard gas severe – with wife”
Kate died in Victoria, Australia in 1947 aged 55. She had at least 2 sons.
