Biography

My Grandmother Mary Jane Dawson who would have worked at the factory no earlier than 1916 as I assume that she would have to be aged 18 at least to work there. She was born 14/10/1898 and passed away 24/10/1981. In the photo she is 3rd row up and 6th from the left. I enclose a further photo showing her with a Scottish friend also taken while she worked at the factory.

Originally from High Spen near Newcastle she married James Layton on 25/07/1923. She lived all her married life in Coxhoe, Co’Durham. She had 5 children, 1 boy who passed away as an infant, and 4 girls, 1 also passing away in infancy. I can’t remember her ever mentioning working there but my mother, her daughter, did.
