William Smullen was born on 13th May 1888 in Dublin, Ireland, to Bernard {Byron}and Annie (Anna) nee Brady.
1901- living at 18, Finglas East, Dublin. 1 of 7 children at this stage.
1910 – admitted to workhouse aged 22 a painter by trade, on the recommendation of Dr Mahoney.
2nd January 1911- discharged from workhouse.
1911- 23 Finglas East, Dublin. Listed as a general labourer. Father was a general labourer also.
1917 – imprisoned in Dumfries Prison, Maxwelltown. (Prison Records) Not clear for how long or for what. Address given as Gretna.
WW1- employed at H M Factory, Gretna as a labourer living at Old Graitney Hut, Gretna. (Electoral register)
Married Isabella Ridley around this time. First child born in 1919 in Newcastle on Tyne. Second one in Sunderland. Subsequently had 8 children. Isabella was possibly also employed at Gretna.
1921 – William, Dora, Isabella and 1 other are on the record in Sunderland.
1939- 47, Carrfield Avenue, Beeston, Nottingham. Wife Isabella plus 2 offspring. Listed as a Painter.
13th May 1968 died at Royal Infirmary, Dumfries of 10 St John’s Road, Annan, Dumfriesshire. The cause of death cardiac failure post operative. Death registration lists him as ‘Master Painter (retired)’ aged 80.
