Herbert Sharp Greenhough was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. He trained as an analytical chemist. During the Great War he volunteered for the
Army and was transferred for munitions work at HM Factory Gretna. After the war, he married, started a family and moved to live in Essex.
Herbert was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne on 23rd June 1890, the son of Edwin and Mary Greenhough. Edwin was a doctor. Following Edwin’s
death, the family returned to Bradford, and in 1901 are living in Stone Hall Road, Eccleshill. In 1911, Herbert is an analyst for the City (1).
He enlisted on 13th February 1915 when the 2nd Bradford Pals battalion was raised, officially the 18th (Service) Battalion, Prince of Wales West
Yorkshire Regiment. On the 6th September 1915, Herbert was transferred to the Royal Engineers and was posted to France. Then on
13th September 1916 he was designated as Class “W” Army Reserve. Class “W” was introduced in June 1916 “for all those soldiers whose services
are deemed to be more valuable to the country in civil rather than military employment”. Men in these classes didn’t need to wear uniform and were
not subject to military discipline (2). Herbert came under the Ministry of Munitions and was employed as a chemist at Dornock. He was demobilized
on 27th January 1919. He married Christine Muriel Meredyth Renny at St Margaret’s Church in Horsforth, Leeds in June 1920. They seem to have had two children. In 1939, the family is living in Redbridge, Essex and Herbert is a Works Manager in Accumulator Manufacture. He died in Epping Forest district in Essex on 9th December 1979. He was 89.
