John Henry Atkinson 1859-1932
John Henry Atkinson was born in Silloth in 1859 to John and Gracie nee Henderson. He was baptised on 18th September 1859.
1861- living at 7 Alma Terrace, Silloth. Father an Agricultural labourer. Youngest child – G/G/B
1871 – still living at Alma Terrace. Father now a dock labourer. At home he is now the eldest B/B/B/B
1881 – John is a farm labourer aged 21 living in West Silloth. Mother is widowed and described as “ formerly dairymaid” born in Kirtlebridge , Scotland.
21st August 1884- married Jane Cartmer in Burnley.
1886 -daughter Grace Henderson born.
1888 – Henrietta born.
1890 – Margaret born
1891 – aged 31 – a police constable living at 16 Bank Street, Police Office, Padiham, Burnley, Lancashire ( now has the police crest and a brown plaque)
1901 – 10 Bank Street, Burnley. Police Constable. Daughters at 15, 14 and 13 are cotton spinners.
1905 – a 4th daughter was born who subsequently died before 1911.
1911- living at 88, Tockholes Rd, Darwen in 5 rooms , now a Police pensioner at 51. Henrietta at home a cotton mill worker.
WW1 John is too old for military service but worked at Gretna – highly likely in the Police service.
1921 census lists him as an ex or retired Gretna worker with an address at Kirkandrews Nether, Longtown, Carlisle John, Jane and Henrietta are listed at this address. It is possible he moved to this address because of his work at Gretna.
11th December 1932 – died at 121, Sudellside Street, Darwen ( Jubilee Terrace 1897 ) Aged 73.
