Biography

Childhood

Doesn’t seem to have any brothers or sisters. His father sailed from London to South Australia on the “ Loch Awe” , on 15/02/1878, and his mother left Plymouth on the “Nebo” 0n 04/12/1881, also bound for South Australia. They married in the United Methodist Free Church, Adelaide 07/07/1882. They must have then returned to Britain after Thomas was born and before 1891 when they appear on the census in Edinburgh, although I cannot find any passenger records for them. In 1891 they were living at Grove Street, St. Cuthbert, Edinburgh, and in 1901 they were at 20, Temple Park Crescent, Edinburgh.   (2) (5) (6)

He appeared in an open air concert at a Carnival in Gretna in aid of France’s Day on 25th August 1917 were he also took place in the mounted wrestling competition.

In 1920 an advert was published  in numerous newspapers which appears to include a statement from Thomas – “ It is generally recognised that for all ordinary cases of stomach trouble, including Indigestion, Flatulence, Heartburn, Gastritis etc., Bisurated Magnesia is an unrivalled remedy……………as in the case of Mr. T.G. Dippie..” –

“West 9, Gretna

For over 15 years I suffered a form of indigestion which produced acute pain………..I consulted several doctors and attended a Royal Infirmary, but only got temporary relief. About four months ago I decided to try Bisurated Magnesia; after the second dose I had not another pain. “ (1)

I hope he was rewarded for this endorsment!
