 Ernest Cleugh born November 1899 in Sunderland to William Henry & Mary Ann Cleugh. 2nd child of 9.

1901 census shows Ernest, age 1, living with parents and older brother James, age 3, in 11 Mere Knolls Road, Fulwell, Sunderland. 

1911 census shows Ernest and family, now 6 children, living in 3, Normanby Street, Sunderland in 2 rooms. This was near the docks. His father still shown as a riveter.

1918 Ernest marries Mary Jane Jackson in Sunderland. An Ancestry tree shows Ernest & Mary met while working at Gretna Ammunition Factory, no records can be found to confirm this.

November 1919 a son, Ernest, born in Sunderland.

1921 census family living in 7, Normanby Street, Sunderland. Ernest is working in shipbuilding as a riveter, just like his father. Interestingly his parents and siblings address is 7, Normanby Street. Ernest living in 2 rooms, his parents and siblings in 3 rooms. Ernest, his father and younger brother William are working for J.L.Thompson, shipbuilders, all 3 following the same profession as riveters.

1939 Registry: Family living 38, Dock Street East. Ernest working as Shipyard Riveter (Heavy work and in the Sunderland Auxiliary Fire Service.

Ernest & Mary had 2 more children, Veronica 1922 & Ronald 1928.

Son, Ernest Jnr died in Sunderland 1971, Ronald died in 1982, daughter Veronica in 2009, Ernest Snr died 31st May 1975, Mary Jane died Nov 1988.

Mary Jane Jackson born 2nd January 1900 in Sunderland to Michael Jackson & Mary Jane Pratt. She had 13 siblings.

1901 census shows the family living in 2 rooms, 11 children, BK 14 Topliff Row, a back to back house. Father shown as coal screener above ground, 3 older brothers also mine workers, below ground.

1911 census shows Jackson family living in 2 rooms, 118, Church Street, Sunderland. 6 Children still at home.

Her father Michael died November 1914 age 55 years.

Both families stayed in and around Sunderland all their lives.
