Monday 17th June

Our youth council had a meeting to try out a World War One recipe for an upcoming project. Thanks to all of them who came along!

Our gardening club have even been growing some wild flowers in certain areas to encourage pollinators like bees!

Monday 1st July

Thursday 4th July

Our free Summer Holiday programme for young people started today with a Minecraft- Inspired Lego Building Competition. It was amazing to see what the young people who came along created out of Lego! There were so many creative designs that our judges found it very hard to choose our third, second and first place prize winners. The second and third place winners won Lego Minecraft magazines, while first place received a Lego Minecraft set. We loved all the Lego builds so much that we gave all the young Lego Master Builders who came along certificate and a little badge!

Friday 5th July

Today’s free workshop was 1940’s retro Make-Up workshop. It was lovely to have so many young people come along and fantastic to have some join us for a free breakfast before this workshop too.

Saturday 6th July

Monday 8th July

Today we had a Mini Anderson Shelter craft workshop. It was brilliant to have young people to join us for this free activity and it was great to see some of them at our free breakfast before the workshop too.

Thursday 11th July

We had our free Retro Gaming Contest today with a Super Nintendo game console. Brilliant to have so many enthusiastic young people join us for this and it was lovely to see some of them at the free breakfast before the workshop. Below are some photos of this activity.

It’s Monthly Roundup time again! In this month’s roundup we have Arts and Crafts, Gardening and more! Catch up with everything below!

Monday 20th May

Today it was fantastic to have Cordite Club back in The Devil’s Porridge Museum. This week they decorated their own fans. To find out more about Cordite Club, please click here>

On this day (20th May) in 2007 Chapelcross’ iconic cooling towers were demolished and thousands of people gathering to witness the event.
With aging equipment and a relatively small electrical output, the decision was made to shut down the reactors and close Chapelcross in 2004. The cooling towers were demolished as part of the decommissioning process.

Tuesday 21st May

Some of our Youth Council had a meeting today. Our Youth Council have regular meetings, get involved in projects, workshops and more. We’re very proud to have two representatives from the museum’s Youth Council who regularly attend The Devil’s Porridge Museum’s trustee meetings. This allows them to share their thoughts and make sure young people’s voices are heard in The Devil’s Porridge Museum!

Wednesday 22nd May

On May 22nd 1915, the tragic local event which remains the worst rail disaster in British history occurred at Quintinshill near Gretna Green – a few miles from where The Devil’s Porridge Museum now stands. It involved troops on their way to board ships for the Gallipoli/Dardanelles campaign. Sadly, around 227 people were killed and around 246 injured.

We were also very proud to welcome someone who had recently celebrated there 100th Birthday for a visit to the museum! They worked at World War Two munitions factory, ICI Powfoot.

Give your clothing a second chance and keep them out of landfill. Bring your old clothes and fabric items to transform into beautiful new garments!

This month our free gardening club for young people has returned for 2024 and we were delighted to welcome Bruce Keith into The Devil’s Porridge Museum to give a free talk. Keep reading to find out everything that happened in our Monthly Roundup for 15th April to 19th May 2024!

Thursday 18th April

On This Day (18th April) in the first planes took off at RAF Annan.
At its peak RAF Annan could boast a staff of 400 RAF personnel housed across its 200-acre site. The airfield’s main focus was training young, inexperienced fighter pilots in offensive attacks. Pilots came from far and wide to train at RAF Annan.
Tragically, many pilots lost their lives while training at RAF Annan.

Our Cordite Club was on again today.  This week they had Scotch pie and beans for dinner. Following this they played Dominos and Connect Four. To learn more about Cordite Club click here>

We were delighted to welcome Bruce Keith into The Devil’s Porridge Museum to give a free talk about his third book “Scotland Beneath the Surface.” A huge thank you to him and to all those who came along!

On this day (2nd May), in 1959 Chapelcross Nuclear Power Station was officially opened as a combined military and civilian nuclear power station by Sir John Crabbe. It was the first Nuclear Power Station in Scotland.

On This Day in 1915, The Times newspaper reported the huge shortages of ammunition on the Western Front leaving the British vulnerable. As a result, the British Government created the Ministry of Munitions with David Lloyd George taking up the role. He created H.M. Factory Gretna.
We’re proud to tell the story of H.M. Factory Gretna and the people worked there at The Devil’s Porridge Museum. Why not come and visit us to find out more?

On This Day (18th May) in 1917, King George V & Queen Mary visited H.M. Factory Gretna.
 
Victoria May McIver was chosen to present flowers to flowers to the Queen, as she was the youngest patient in the hospital at the time of the royal visit. Below is a photo of this.

Arts and Crafts Club 2024

Our Arts and Crafts Club is back for 2024! Starting on Monday 22nd January 2024.

It will be on every Monday from 3:30 to 4:30pm. It’s perfect for  7 to 11 year olds.

We’ll craft together and make something pretty! This club is free, just be sure to bring along your imagination. You never know what we’ll be making!

Places are limited. Booking is essential.

Monday 18th March

Tuesday 19th March

Thursday 21st March

Today we had a group visit. It was fantastic to have them at The Devil’s Porridge Museum! Please remember that it is essential to book group visits in advance. Monday 25th March

This was the first day of our Easter Egg trail around The Devil’s Porridge Museum. It ran at The Devil’s Porridge Museum until 5th April 2024. Admission was essential to take part in this activity.

It was fantastic to see so many young people enjoying this trail! There are three photos of this below.

Tuesday 26th March

Monday 19th February

Fantastic to have our Cordite club back in The Devil’s Porridge Museum today! This week they had a talk about Dorothée Pullinger.

Monday 26th February

We had a fantastic time with the children and teenagers from Girlguiding! The Brownies, the Guides and the Rangers visited us at night to explore the museum, learn about our collections, and complete some challenges to earn their Girlguiding badges!

The Brownies were working on their Collectors Badge, the Guides on their Human Rights Badge, and the Rangers on the Woman’s Rights Badge!!

It was another busy day at The Devil’s Porridge Museum today!

Welcome back to another Monthly Roundup for The Devil’s Porridge Museum! From Burns Night to Valentine’s Crafts there’s been lots to enjoy at The Devil’s Porridge Museum. Read on to find out more.

Friday 26th January

On Friday 26th January we had our annual Burns Supper! We had haggis, highland dances and bagpipers. Thank you to everyone who came along and all those who helped to make this event a success!

Wednesday 31st January

Today the installation of our latest exhibition began. Thanks to Museum’s Galleries Scotland for their generous support of our climate change project. Below are some photos of installing the exhibition.

We were delighted to have our young curator, Riley join us to help to put up the exhibition. He designed one of the panels which is now on display as part of the exhibition. Some photos of our Young Curator, Riley and the panel he created can be seen below.

As part of the exhibition we have an activity where people can share what they are doing to tackle climate change. Take a look at some photos of this below. A huge thank you to those who let us take and share these.

Monday 5th February 

Our group of retirees, the Cordite Club were back in The Devil’s Porridge Museum again today. This week they enjoyed some fun board games.

Wednesday 7th February

We were delighted to have a visit from University of Glasgow, campus Dumfries today. The museum’s Office Manager, Curator and Youth and Community Engagement Officer gave the students a talk about the way the museum is run. Monday 12th February

Today was the start of February half term, which means the start of a very exciting trail around The Devil’s Porridge Museum from Kids in Museum’s and Walker Books.
